Creating a ‘Space with a Soul’: Children’s Theatre Redesign

Glasgow 2024

The redesign of the paediatric operating theatres at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow received national media coverage and offers a compelling example of how clinical environments can be rethought through design. Led by paediatric anaesthetist Dr Aly Walker, the project brought together clinicians, designers, and patients to reshape the experience of care from the ground up.

The resulting spaces move away from traditional clinical settings, using colour, light, and carefully designed environments to reduce anxiety and improve the experience for children, families, and staff.

It reflects a growing recognition that healthcare environments matter. Spaces like this show what’s possible when design is treated as part of care—not an afterthought
